About Our Club

2015-2016 was our inaugural season in USA Wrestling, the organization governing wrestling from the Olympics all the way down to youth clubs like ours. We had a very successful season and finished in second place as a team at the TX-USA Rookie State tournament in Amarillo in February. We also had Several Rookie & Novice State champions.

Competing in USA Wrestling allows us to compete on state and national levels with other wrestlers the same age, weight, and experience level as our wrestlers. There are many tournaments across Texas and United States but we compete mostly in the DFW area.

Practice

Practices are held at the First United Methodist Church in Winnsboro

We need all wrestlers to be at all practices. We can not evaluate and teach a wrestler who is not at practice. We understand things happen and circumstances can cause a wrestler to miss an occasional practice. No wrestler is good enough to miss practice on a regular basis and it will show on the mat in competition. Please text Mike Laborde if your child will be missing a practice. Because of our limited practice time, wrestlers need to be at the practice facility with enough time to be ready to step on the mat (in shorts and t-shirt with wrestling shoes on their feet and headgear in hand) at their assigned time.

To begin the season, we will be having at least 3 practices a week. We plan to practice on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. We will sometimes hold Friday practices, also.

Wrestlers will be assigned to each practice by the coaches.

The Season

Folkstyle wrestling season runs from November through February.

Tournaments

Our main competition opportunities will be USA Wrestling tournaments. These tournaments are held on weekends with the closest ones in the Dallas/Ft Worth and Houston areas. An overnight stay is often advised. We will provide coaching to each wrestler at at least 4 tournaments plus the State Championship tournaments. All entry fees (usually $15 for smaller ones and up to $35 for larger ones), transportation, lodging, and meals will be the responsibility of the parents. Please see the WRESTLING EXPENSES menu link above for a list of parental financial responsibilities.

Team Coaches and Volunteers

Everyone involved in the club is a volunteer and are giving their time and talents as best they can. All coaching staff and any volunteers on the mat have been certified by USA Wrestling, have had a background check through TC logiQ, and have completed the "Ministry Safe" program though FUMC. Please give them the respect they deserve.

Team volunteers are welcome and are needed in many capacities. There are several different ways you can help this program. If you are interested on helping with off mat duties during practices, please contact Mike Laborde at (903)975-1116 as soon as possible and he will explain what is required so you can make an informed decision. Please keep in mind that volunteering is a privilege, not a right. There will be guidelines and rules for all volunteers and any conduct deemed inappropriate will disqualify from being a helper of any sort.

Team Mission

The Winnsboro Wrestling Club is committed to developing your child as whole, in Mind, Body, and Spirit, through the great sport of wrestling. Our program and the sport of wrestling will help your child grow on and off the mats.

We will encourage your child to grow spiritually. We are not concerned about where, or even if, you go to church. We are not here to push any specific religion on your child. We are here to plant the word of GOD and allow them, in their own time, to make decisions on their own faith and beliefs.

We plan to have a bible study once a week as part of practice. Bible studies will be led by many different Christian leaders from our community.

Winnsboro Wrestling Club is not a “boot camp” or a disciple program but wrestling does aid in the development of personal discipline. Team rules will be explained then enforced. Besides personal discipline, there is much to be learned from the sport. For example, learning from and living with the decisions that we make every day and gaining knowledge on how to face the struggles we encounter in our life. Faith and wrestling both are great tool to have in the path to success and becoming leaders in life, leaders of our families and leaders in our communities.
